What a First Session Actually Looks Like

Most people arrive at a first session braced for an interrogation. It is closer to a conversation. Leonard will ask what brought you in, what you have already tried, and what you want to be different, and you are free to answer in as much or as little detail as you want. Nothing is diagnosed on day one.

The practical part matters too: how often you would meet, what the work might focus on, and whether the two of you are a fit. Not every therapist suits every person, and a first conversation is the honest way to find out. If it is not a fit, saying so early costs you nothing.

When a Marriage Stops Arguing and Starts Drifting

Couples often assume the warning sign is conflict. Frequently it is the opposite: the arguments stop, the logistics take over, and two people run a household without ever really talking. Drift is quieter than conflict, which is exactly why it goes unaddressed for years.

Marriage counseling is not about relitigating who was right. It is about breaking the cycles that turn small conflicts into big ones, and rebuilding the habit of speaking honestly in front of each other. Couples who show up consistently tend to find that the hard conversations get easier to start, covering intimacy, money and family, which is usually where the distance came from.

Grief Does Not Run on a Schedule

There is no correct duration for grief, and no stage you are supposed to reach by a certain month. Loss comes in many forms: the death of someone loved, the end of a relationship, a career, an identity, or a version of life you expected to have, and each one keeps its own time.

What grief counseling offers is not a timeline but a witness: one hour a week where you are not managing anyone else’s discomfort, and where guilt, anger and relief can all be true at once. Nobody has to perform recovery here.
